Civil resilience on the Isle of Wight
Residents join free. Continuity plans and exercises for the buildings that have to stay open.
The Island depends on the ferries and on the cables and pipes under the Solent. When those go, help from the mainland takes longer, which is why it matters that neighbours know each other and that buildings can run on their own for a few days.
The network covers Newport, Ryde, Cowes, East Cowes, Sandown, Shanklin, Ventnor, Freshwater, Yarmouth and Bembridge.
Residents on the Isle of Wight
Membership is free. Members are people on the same streets who have done the basics at home and know each other's names before anything happens. Residents and neighbours.
Organisations on the Isle of Wight
Care homes, schools, surgeries and the firms on the Isle of Wight that have to stay open when the services stop are expected to hold a continuity plan that has been tested. I write the plan for the building you actually have, test it with you and the staff on duty in the working day, and write the test up and date it for the file. Continuity plans and exercises.
The local resilience forum
South Coast Civil Resilience is independent and civilian. In an emergency, call 999. The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Local Resilience Forum covers the Island as well as the mainland, and publishes its guidance for community groups at hiowprepared.org.uk. The network sits alongside it, not in its place.
